My Volleyball Transfer Journey: From Uncertainty to the Perfect Fit
Transferring as a collegiate athlete is a journey full of emotions—excitement, stress, and sometimes even doubt. When I first entered the transfer portal as a sophomore at my junior college, I had no idea just how overwhelming the process would be. However, looking back now, I can confidently say that everything fell into place exactly how it was meant to. If you’re a volleyball player considering a transfer, I hope my story provides some insight and reassurance!
The Initial Commitment
Entering the transfer portal was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. It was my chance to find a program where I could continue playing at a higher level while also earning my degree. Like most athletes in this situation, I went on several visits, talked to coaches, and weighed my options.
After what felt like endless emails, calls, and campus tours, I finally made a decision—I verbally committed to an NAIA school in Virginia. At the time, it seemed like the perfect fit. The coaching staff was welcoming, the campus was beautiful, and I could picture myself thriving there both academically and athletically. So, I took the leap and committed.
Doubt Starts Creeping In
But here’s the thing—committing early doesn’t necessarily mean you’re making the right choice. A few weeks later, doubt started to settle in.
It was only February, and I still had plenty of time to explore my options before finalizing my transfer. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had rushed into my decision. Was this really the best fit for me? Would I be happy there for the next two years? The more I thought about it, the more I realized I needed to slow down and reassess.
An Unexpected Opportunity
One of my best friends from my juco team was also in the process of transferring. She had just committed to Minot State University, a Division II program in North Dakota. One day, their coach asked her about me, and she mentioned that I was still navigating the transfer process. That simple conversation ended up changing everything for me.
The coaching staff at Minot State reached out, and I decided to give them a shot. I researched the program, had a few conversations with the coaches, and the more I learned, the more I liked. It felt like the kind of environment I had been looking for all along.
Making the Switch
By the end of April, I had officially verbally committed to Minot State! The best part? My best friend and I signed together and moved in together, making the transition that much easier.
Looking back, I’m so glad I didn’t settle for my first commitment. It’s easy to feel pressured into making a quick decision, especially when you see other players committing left and right. But taking the time to truly evaluate your options is crucial.
Lessons Learned from the Transfer Process
If you’re going through the transfer process or considering it, here are a few things I learned along the way:
✅ Don’t rush your commitment – Just because you receive an offer early doesn’t mean you have to accept it right away. Give yourself time to weigh your options.
✅ Visit multiple schools – Seeing a campus in person and meeting the team can give you a much better idea of whether or not a school is the right fit.
✅ Ask all the right questions – Make sure you understand what your role on the team will be, scholarship opportunities, academic support, and team culture.
✅ Trust your instincts – If something doesn’t feel right, listen to your gut. It’s okay to change your mind if you realize a school isn’t the best fit.
✅ Lean on your support system – Whether it’s teammates, family, or coaches, having people to talk to can make the process much less stressful.
Final Thoughts
Transferring can feel overwhelming, but it’s an opportunity to find the best possible fit for your academic and athletic future. If you’re currently navigating the transfer portal, take your time, do your research, and trust the process.
At the end of the day, you deserve to play at a school that makes you excited to wake up every morning, work hard, and enjoy the game you love. I’m so grateful I took the leap and found my home at Minot State University—and even better, I got to experience it alongside one of my best friends!
